Kumu Pomaika’i started hula as a court chanter for ‘Ilima Inter. School May Day Program at the age of 12. Thanks to Mrs Hinano Felmet, who made me do it!
Kumu Pomaika’i was a member of The Gentlemen of Maluikeao under the direction of Kumu Hula Frank Palani Kahala. While with the Gentlemen he was Alaka’i and Kokua Kumu till the passing of Kumu Palani. He had ‘uniki with Kumu Palani in the 1990′s. He has also studied with the late Darryl Lupenui, early ’70′s. Ali’i Manu o Kai, Waikiki action there, and Kaulana Kasprovitch, just to name a few.
Kumu Pomaika’i resides in West Valley City, UT along with wife, Kehaulani, children and grandchildren. Hula is a big part of his life and is willing to share with all that comes through the halau. He is also a very active in the Hawaiian community in Utah, holding various different positions such as: Former Board Member@ PIAC – Pacific Islander Advisory Council, for than Governor John Huntsman, Jr., Past President/BOD, Hui Hawai’i o Utah Hawaiian Civic Club, Board member, So. Salt Lake Community Council.
